Jacoby Ellsbury & Josh Beckett Launch Their Charity Wines

Yesterday, in the shadows of the Green Monster, I attended the launch party for Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Beckett's charity wines. The event was held at the exclusive Foundation Room at the House of Blues. Ellsbury and Beckett are the latest athletes to launch their wines "ZinfandEllsbury" and "Chardon-K" under the Longball Cellars brand.

NESN personality Heidi Watney emceed the event which was attended by Ellsbury. Beckett was supposed to be there but he's been "whining" about a tweaked back and had to focus on treatment in hopes he won't miss his next start (Get it? "whining"). Watney said the back problem stemmed from Beckett having to take batting practice in order to prepare for inter-league play later this month.

Heidi Watney

Jason Oberle, Executive Director of the Josh Beckett Foundation was on hand to read a statement from Beckett:
Jason Oberle
"With my new contract here in Boston, it is going to give me the chance to pursue even more opportunities to help the children in New England with my Foundation. These opportunities would not be possible if it were not for the dedication and hard work from companies like Charity Hop who also give back to our charities."
1oo% of proceeds from sales of Beckett's wine will go to the Josh Beckett Foundation, which supports community-based programs that strive to improve the health and well-being of children, especially those who are seriously ill, disabled or otherwise disadvantaged.

One example of how this charity has helped local kids is the Josh Beckett Treatment Room at Children's Hospital. Located in their Oncology department it's a room where sick kids can go in and focus on the cheerful Fenway Park imagery instead of drab walls. Once their treatment is done they leave with a Beckett baseball card and a picture.

Oberle also announced that Jason Aldean will be performing this July after Josh Beckett's Charity Bowl celebration, Beckett Bowl. I love that they're bringing this country star to Boston and hope I'm able to attend the event.

Next up was Andrew Graff. Graff started Charity Wines with the goal of finding athletes and celebrities, and matching them with fine wines to raise funds for the charities of their choice.

Andrew Graff

I was really hoping for the opportunity to speak with Graff, as he is a businessman I have looked up to for a long time. It has always been my hope to work for a non-profit or charity organization, while being able to support my family. Graff has found a way to combine that with sports and I really can't imagine anything better. Unfortunately it was not in the cards for me to meet him yesterday, but I was grateful to be able to hear him speak.

Shannon Albert, President of the Navajo Relief Fund spoke a little bit about the Navajo people. They represent the largest reservation in the United States and still take part in traditional activities such as basket weaving, rug making, harvest dance and silver making. What most people don't realize is the difficulty in the day-to-day conditions the Navajos face.

The current unemployment rate on the reservation is between 40%-50% and over 300,000 Navajos live below the poverty level. Nearly half of the high school students are drop-outs and teen suicide is well above the national average.

In her sincere thanks to Ellsbury (whose grandmother and mother are full Navajo) she presented him with a beautiful silver and turquoise bracelet which Ellsbury said reminded him of his grandmother.

“I have been blessed, not only to be a professional athlete but to be able to give back to the less fortunate,” Ellsbury said.

He mentioned how it took him a while to choose the charities who would benefit from wine sales. So difficult was it, he couldn't choose just one but was able to narrow it down to three charities which he said are "all near and dear" to his heart.

I already mentioned the first one, The Navajo Relief Fund helps Native Americans improve their quality of life by providing opportunities for them to bring about positive changes in their own communities.

The second is Project Bread. Executive Director Ellen Parker was on hand to talk about the leading anti-hunger organization, and how the money earned from sales of Ellsbury's wine will go to in-school programs to ensure kids from low-income families will be fed nutritious breakfast and lunches during school.

Ellen Parker

Ellsbury's third organization is the Ellsbury-Read Project. I was unable to find a website for this organization (So um....if you need some help with your online visibility, contact me!) but the Project helps promote child abuse prevention so every child can be safe at home.

Ellsbury talked a little bit about his number change from 46 back to his preferred 2 (He did mention 46 served him well in 2007 when the Sox won the World Series. Watney joked maybe he should switch back), his hopeful return to baseball "soon" and joked how his wine tasted better and had a better name than Beckett's.

He was so gracious posing for pictures, signing autographs and talking to his fans.

If you're a faithful reader of my blog, you know I'm a big fan of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Ellsbury played for the Cape League in 2004 for the Falmouth Commodores (*side note: The Commodores lost the championship to the Y-D Red Sox, my home-town team!). It's hard to believe he wasn't the heart-throb back then that he is now.

Swoon-worthy Ellsbury

That's not to say he wasn't adorable, but he wasn't the guy on the team all of the girls swooned over, like he is now.

Speaking of swooning girls...Ellsbury's long-time girlfriend Kelsey Hawkins was at the event. Despite rumors that have been swirling around lately Hawkins wasn't sporting a ring on her left-hand.

Jacoby Ellsbury's girlfriend, Kelsey Hawkins

You know who was sporting bling, though? Jacoby. Check this watch out!
Ellsbury's Watch

Does anyone know what brand that is? Wow.....

OK, back to the serious stuff.

I need to thank Brett Rudy from Charity Hop for inviting me to this wonderful event! The wines are now available for around $14 in local establishments, as well as online.

Mike Lembo, Brett Rudy & Jacoby Ellsbury

Please raise your glasses for both Beckett and Ellsbury
for using their status as a professional athlete to help those in need.

It's My Fault...

I couldn't write about Beckett's amazing and commanding performance in game 5 of the ALCS because I committed my cardinal sin of blogging. I read my friends blogs before I posted, and thus got major brain cramps and writers block. There was nothing I could say that hadn't already been said. And while that's often the case, at least I know I didn't "steal" content from anyone. So instead of trying to come up with something to say a few days later, I'm just going to link to some great posts that day for your reading pleasure.

Jere from A Red Sox Fan From Pinstripe Territory
explains why Manny's long single was not a homerun.
Beth from Cursed to First gives some witty commentary and breaks down the Beckett v Lofton "almost" fight.
Matt at Cursed to First keeps growing his playoff beard.
Dan at Red Sox Monster lets you know what Beckett thought of our "ex-girlfriend" questions.
Derek at SawxBlog had a great post about the game, but also linked to this wonderful article about his mother.
RedSock at the Joy of Sox talked about how Schilling watched the game from his home.

There were lots of other great posts....but this should give you a good idea what was going on in the blogesphere on Friday.

Josh Beckett Pitches a Shut-Out in Game 1 of the 2007 ALDS

Oh yes, yes he DID!!!!!!!

The night started out great - the weather was a comfortable 63 degrees and the Standells did an Amazing rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a flag being draped over the Monster and a flyover. Then they broke into their (one) hit - DIRTY WATER!

Here
the
Flag
Flag - Standells Playing the National Anthem and Dirty Water

Beckett gave up a single to Chone Figgins to start the game, but went on to retire the next 19 batters in order!!! He ended up with a complete game shut out (the first time a Red Sox pitcher has done this in the post-season since Luis Tiant in 1975! And the first time a MLB pitcher has done it since...well...himself in 2003). He gave up 4 hits over 9 innings, walked nobody, struck out 7. He was amazing and proved himself to be the Cy Young pitcher we all KNOW he is!

The Sox continued to give trouble to Lackey
who gave up 9 hits in 6 innings including two home runs from YOUK and PAPI! There were a couple of bad calls (um, ump - Cabrera NEVER touched Lugo and Manny's 3rd called strike in the 5th was outside!) but all in all it was an AMAZING game and a great night to be at Fenway Park. Coco, Lowell and Ellsbury all made fantastic defensive plays to contribute to this well-deserved win.

I'm tired, and not to witty so I'll leave you with this - a very unsteady shot (sorry had to get my high fives in!) of the last out of the game (a fly ball by Anderson to center field). GOOOOOO SOOOOOOXXXXXX!!!!!!

John Lackey vs. Josh Beckett

A lot of stats have been thrown around today about Lackey's pitching (in)ability against the Red Sox. I can't find any two stats which agree, so I thought I'd do my own analysis.

This season Lackey has won 19 games for the Angels with a 3.01 ERA and 179 Ks.
This season Beckett has won 20 games for the Sox with a 3.27 ERA and 194 Ks.

So what does this mean? Is Coco going to be sitting (0-5) in favor of Ellsbury who might light this guy up? I doubt it. Crip's lifetime BA against Lackey is .182, not exactly great, eh? Will Tek be sitting (0-1) in favor of Mirabelli (3-4) - is this why we have so many catchers in our ALDS roster? I doubt it. Varitek's lifetime BA against Lackey is .278, that's a bit better.

And in exciting (for us girls!) news, Babe Kapler will be sharing his thoughts on the Red Sox during the 2007 playoffs!

Who the He!! is Boof Bonser?

And what kind of name is Boof anyway? I'll tell you who he is, the craptastic pitcher who beat Cy Young candidate Josh Beckett in tonight's Sox vs. Twins game. There's nothing more he can do to help his team win the division, except sit on the sidelines with his pompons.

I'm sure this guy's named Boof too. Or maybe that thing on his head is called a Boof?

Highlights of the game?

  • Papi's Homer
  • Tek's Homer
  • Drew's second intentional walks in as many games
  • Hearing the Okie Dokie song
  • Seeing bad comb-over dude (above)
  • Eating Kielbasa with peppers and onions
  • Uncle Ron's name on the scoreboard*
Lowlights?
  • We lost, Stankees won**
  • Leaving 12 men on base
  • Tek and Youk striking out in the bottom of the 9th with bases loaded
  • Jacoby Ellsbury leaving the game with a calf cramp
  • Not getting to hear 'Wild Thing' and 'Shipping Up to Boston' OR 'Dirty Water'
  • It rained
  • Did I mention we lost and the Stankees won?
  • Stupid security guard who tried to make us sit from the G-Spot***
  • Seeing the fan in the bleachers get thrown out after throwing a Twins homerun ball back on the field
*UncleTomBiscoeDad's brother, Ron, passed away two years ago to the day (tomorrow would have been his 62nd birthday). This game was dubbed the 'Uncle Ron Memorial Game' and was immortalized on the Fenway Park Scoreboard.

Ron Biscoe Memorial Game

** And they won, despite AFraud, Jeter, Posada and Abreau (were there more? likely) all sitting out because they were too hung over from last night (that's my guess why they weren't playing)

***For the past four years, as a season ticket holder, UncleTomBiscoeDad has ALWAYS stood at the "G-Spot" during the games. Tonight some pompus @ss security guard told him he had to sit. That has NEVER happened before. I mean, he's AGAINST the wall and NOT in anyone's way. What gives? Don't worry....he stood back up. Security was just nasty tonight.

Josh Beckett and RSN Breathe a Collective CY of Relief

Magic Number to Clinch the Division: 7
Magic Number to Clinch a Playoff Spot: 2

Finally - so much good news to report!

Josh Beckett & Cy Young - I really have to believe that last night's performance clinched the Cy Young award for Josh Beckett (although nothing is ever certain with this Red Sox team). Beckett became the major's first 20 game winner since 2005. From an article on RedSox.com:
By the time Beckett got to his locker postgame, there were two bottles of Dom Perignon waiting for him. One was from clubhouse attendant Joe Cochran. The other was from right-hander Curt Schilling.
Jacoby Ellsbury is a horse, dude - Sorry Cinco Ocho, I had to borrow your line. Ellsbury continues to dominate. I have had the pleasure to see this rookie sensation play on the Cape League, in Lowell and Finally in a Boston Red Sox uniform. I had to catch the replay of this catch on Sports Center this morning and I'm glad I did.

This play was voted the top play on Sports Center.

David Ortiz - He didn't disappoint, again....Big Papi started against the left-hander Kazmir when he would usually have a night off. He did this because he KNEW the importance of this win. Not just for Beckett, but for the Red Sox and well...with Manny and Youk out our lineup is a lot weaker. He played on a bad knee, with a sore shoulder and he did it going 3-5 with a homer. This guy is clutch (as if we didn't already know that). Let's just pray he makes it through the playoffs.

Brian Bruney is my favorite Yankees Player - So maybe I didn't know who the heck he was when I saw him practicing in the bullpen last Sunday, but he's made his name known with me.

Brian Bruney
Brian Bruney

He gave up a single homer to Gregg Zaun in the 14th to lose the game for the Yankees. They are now 2 1/2 games behind the Sox in the division race with 9 games left to play (8 games left for the Sox).

Sha Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye Barry - The Giants made it official, they are not interested in having Bonds back for a 16th Season. He, however, is still on the quest for a Championship Ring....since his defense is lacking it is only logical that if this is to happen he needs to play for an American League team. Sorry Barry, no room for a DH on our team. Wouldn't it be great for him not to get a job? I mean, I think he'll get one, but we can dream right?

On to today...
Dice K is just 1-3 against Tampa Bay this season, with both of his losses coming AT Tampa Bay. Let's hope the team can pull it together today...LETS GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Red Sox vs. Kansas City - Game 2

1st Inning
8:10 - I still need to get used to seeing Lugo in a Red Sox uniform. For a guy who was supposed to bring a hot bat to the team, going 1-4 (opening day) and 0-1 (so far tonight) doesn't thrill me. I know, it's only the BEGINNING of the second game. Patience my dear Soxy Lady! I don't know why I am expecting miracles from the start. Afterall both Manny, Tek and Coco are 0-4
8:12 - Youk flies out to right field
8:14 - Papi walks, lets see what Manny can do...
8:15 - Line drive to left field! Yay Manny!
8:16 - "Lets go Red Sox" man, how I've missed that chant. Yes, I watched the game Monday night, but I was in a bar and couldn't hear the fans. JD Drew, RBI double down the right field line. 1-0 Sox!
8:19 - RBI double down the left field line for Mike Lowell! 3-0 Sox! Ok, Tek come on....do something here!
8:23 - Guess I should have been more specific, I didn't mean for Tek to fly out to center. But he did get a good piece of the ball. We should be thankful for that, at least.
-----
8:28 - Beckett gives up a walk to DeJesus
8:31 - 5-4-3 double play!
8:32 - followed by a double...
8:34 - and Beckett gets out of the inning by a 3-0 pop up to right field. End of inning pitch count 18.

2nd Inning
8:39
- Coco stikes out looking

8:40 - Pedroia flies out to right
8:42 - 5-3 ground out for Lugo. 1 for 6 in the season
---
8:46 - 1st strikeout of the night for Josh
8:52 - Ground out, two out walk and eventually a fly out. Beckett is throwing a lot of balls. I'd be curious to find out what his ball to strike ratio is. Important thing is that the score is still 3-0, good guys.

3rd Inning
8:56
- Youk grounds out. They didn't show him walking back to the dugout, I wonder if he was cursing at himself....cracks me up when he does that. **Edit: It was the top of the 9th and we are ahead 7-1 and Youk strikes out and screams "FU(K!!!" afterwards. Calm down dude, we won...you had a decent game, helluva homer. Let this one go.
8:56 - Quick pop out for Papi
8:58 - Strike three called on Manny.
---
OK, so you know how earlier how I said I wasn't sure live blogging was my "thing?" Well, I am sure now. It's not my thing. I might make some periodic comments during the game. But not this batter by batter thing. It's a snore-fest to write so I'm sure it's as boring to read.

One thing I have to mention is that Mike Lowell just got back to back errors. I can't believe it! He only had six errors in all of last season! Poor Lowell and he was having a good offensive game. I hope this doesn't set him off for the rest of the game. **Edit: Make that three errors on the game. Bottom of the 9th, two outs Lowell gets a routine 5-3 ball and short hops it to first. OK, well I'm going to try and put this behind me like I'm going to try and put Curt's opening day behind me.

Jerry did give some comic relief in the top of the seventh..momentarily forgetting to call the game when he drew a diagram on some poor shirtless Royal's fan chest...advising him where to groom his chest hair. He called it "manscaping" and compared him to Austin Powers - Good times, I missed Jerry. In the middle of the inning they went back to the guy, showing his back hair and where it conntects to his chest hair. I love when they get bored. Don said it's like he's wearing a carpet and even though he's shirtless in the 30-some-odd degree weather, he's surely warm.

Sox win 7-1.

Brrrrrr.....

Where did this cold weather (both here in the Boston area and in Kansas City!) come from? Snow in April? I do not approve!

Beckett is getting his '07 start tonight and there is a lot of hype around it. This is supposed to be "his" year - forget Dice K, people are saying Josh will be our star pitcher. Let's hope that starts with tonight. I have yet to decide if I'll live blog or not during the game. I'm not really sure it's my thing.

I also want to send best wishes to Jon Lester who will be starting tomorrow night with the Greenville Drive, under manager Gabe Kapler! If things go well with Jon, we could be seeing him as soon as May in a Boston uniform! I can only hope I'll be there for that reception when it happens :o)

GO SOX
